How long are the lessons? One hour, forty-five minutes, or half an hour long.
Are lessons private? Yes. All lessons are private. However, there are optional piano classes in the summer that are for existing students to learn to play together in large groups.
What do I need to bring for my lessons? You will need: a bag to carry in your things, a pencil, clipped finger nails, and a binder to hold your Music Theory and History.
How are the lessons structured? In each lesson students will learn Music Theory, Music History, technique, and ear training. Each of these areas is integral to the ability to play well. Music is the only subject that lights up all areas of the brain! Spatial reasoning, symbolic recognition, fine motor skills, and self-expression are all developed through the reading and playing of music.
What is Music Theory? Music Theory explains the rules and why’s of music. It is what grammar is to English. Through theory, you learn how to write out music.
What is technique? Technique is the motor skills that you learn and develop when playing the piano; pedaling, fingering, posture, and hand positioning are all aspects of technique.
What is ear training? Ear training allows you to identify what is being played without seeing any music. It develops the ability to listen and write out what you hear.
Why teach Music History? Music history gives you the ability to make knowledgeable stylistic choices when performing. It also allows you to appreciate where we are musically now, as you learn of the great developments by inspiring people. Finally, when you come across different instruments you know what they do and why no matter the age of the instrument.
